How Tough Is The Space Safe, Really?

Ask whether any safe is indestructible, and the honest answer will always be no. Not this one, not any of them. Given enough time, enough noise, and the right tools, any safe will open. A safe’s job is to make that take longer than a thief is willing to spend. That is what makes The Space Safe different. It is not just well built. It also tells you the second anything happens to it.

So the useful question isn’t whether The Space Safe is indestructible. It is what the safe is made of, what it does while someone is trying to open it, and where its limits actually are. Here is the case, with the numbers behind it.

What it’s built from

The body is reinforced 9-gauge steel with a double wall. The locking mechanism’s pin is 4140 alloy steel. That pin matters more than most buyers realize, because prying is how safes actually get opened. It is not a bat or an axe that beats a safe, it is leverage, and leverage is applied at the door.

The safe ships with four pre-drilled holes to allow you to anchor it to a wall or floor for extra security. This is the single most important thing you can do for any safe, and the step most people skip. An unanchored safe doesn’t need to be opened in your home. It can be carried out to a van and opened somewhere quiet, with a grinder, a pry bar, and all the time in the world, which is why we recommend that everyone anchors their safe. Anchoring takes that option away and forces the attack to happen in your house, on your schedule. And because they are now stuck doing it in your home, the safe is notifying you while it happens.

So what does steel gauge mean? The numbering is counterintuitive: lower gauge means thicker steel, and thicker steel is another layer of security. Nine-gauge is roughly an eighth of an inch, and doubling the wall means an attacker is working through two layers, not one. Plenty of “home safes” in this size class are built from 14- or 16-gauge sheet steel with no double wall, thin enough to open with a household drill and patience.

Inside there is 0.67 cubic feet of usable space: interior dimensions of 14.7 x 9.6 x 8.2 inches, with a two-inch door. That is enough for documents, a couple of pistols, cash, jewelry, drives, and passports, without being so large that the safe becomes furniture you can’t anchor or hide.

What happens when someone attacks it

An ordinary safe is a passive box. It sits there and resists, and that is the whole of its contribution. If someone is breaking into it at three in the morning, the safe will not tell you, will not tell anyone, and will not do anything differently. You find out when you next open it.

The Space Safe is built to do the opposite. It notices the moment it is being attacked and tells you while it is happening, so you can react. It locks its own screen, raises an alarm, and tells the person standing in front of it that they have been seen.

Accelerometer lockdown

An accelerometer detects physical contact and impact. Movement, a strike, or an attempt to lever the door triggers lockdown mode automatically, and sounds an alarm, with no action needed from you. Nobody has to be watching a phone for the safe to start defending itself.

Cameras, inside and out

Integrated interior and exterior cameras let you see the safe and its contents remotely, so an alert is something you can verify rather than guess at.

Remote lockdown

The safe enters lockdown in three ways:

  1. Someone enters an incorrect PIN three times. The safe locks down and sounds an alarm.
  2. The accelerometer detects movement or tampering. Lockdown again, and the alarm again. Nobody has to be watching a phone for this to happen. Someone jostles the safe at three in the morning and it starts defending itself whether you are awake, asleep, or on another continent.
  3. You trigger it yourself from the app, from anywhere in the world. This one is silent by default, because you are the one doing it, but you can sound the alarm remotely too if you want whoever is standing there to know it.

There is a logic to that. The safe raises the alarm by itself when it is being attacked, and stays quiet when you are the one locking it, while leaving the choice in your hands.

In lockdown the touchscreen goes completely inactive, so the safe cannot be operated at all, while the sensors and notifications keep running. Touch it and the screen displays a message telling the intruder they have been seen. You disengage lockdown from the app, or with one of the three override emergency keys that ship with the safe.

A traditional safe does none of this. It resists in silence, and you find out days later.

How you get in

Your fingerprint

The safe opens to biometric fingerprint sensors with 360° detection, so your print reads at any angle. It sounds like a small thing until you are crouched at a closet floor in the dark, holding a phone in your other hand, trying to present a thumb at the one orientation a cheaper reader will accept.

The owner plus up to three additional users can be granted access, and temporary access can be issued and revoked.

Temporary access is the feature people underestimate until they need it. A cleaner who comes on Thursdays does not need permanent entry. Neither does the friend feeding your cat, the contractor working in the back bedroom, or the guest between Airbnb turnovers. With a keyed or dial safe your only options are to hand over the combination permanently or to be physically present. Here you grant access, and then you take it back, and there is a record of both.

Your phone

The safe connects over Wi-Fi to the Space App for alerts, camera access, and lockdown. That link is protected with AES-256 encryption.

It’s worth being precise about what that means, because “military-grade encryption” gets thrown around carelessly. A 256-bit key has 2256 possible values, a 78-digit number:

Brute-forcing that is not a matter of a fast computer and patience; it is not achievable with existing hardware on any timescale that matters. What encryption protects is the connection between your safe and your phone. It has nothing to do with the physical build of the box. That is what the steel and the locking pin are for.

Power

The safe runs on a constant power source with a rechargeable backup battery that lasts up to 24 hours, so a cut cable or an outage doesn’t lock you out or shut the sensors off.

What’s inside, and how it’s watched

Temperature and humidity sensors monitor conditions inside the safe and report them to the app, so you know the environment your documents, electronics, or film are actually sitting in, rather than assuming.

Caring for your safe

  1. Skip harsh chemicals and solvents. A soft cloth, lightly moistened with water, handles spills and debris.
  2. Wipe down and fully dry anything that could carry debris into the safe.
  3. Don’t crowd the interior.
  4. Keep the safe closed when not in use.
  5. Keep The Space App updated.

So, how tough is it?

Nothing is indestructible. The Space Safe is 9-gauge double-wall steel with a 4140 steel locking pin. It anchors to the floor. It notices contact, shows you what is happening, and locks itself down before you have finished reading the alert. It opens to your fingerprint in seconds and to nobody else’s.

A safe does not have to be indestructible to be the wrong thing to attack. It only has to cost more time, more noise, and more risk than a burglar is prepared to spend. By that measure, the only measure that has ever mattered, it is a very tough safe indeed.
