Jan 2026 - OTA Update
We want to clear up a common misunderstanding. Placing an order on our website is a preorder only, and it does not mean that order ships right away. We have not completed PCBA testing yet, and so far, no safes have shipped to anyone. The date shown on our website is only an estimated placeholder, not an active shipping date.
🛜 OTA
We finally have good OTA news to share.
As a reminder, many months ago we reported that roughly 33% of OTA updates were failing and bricking safes. In April, after months of troubleshooting, we decided to pause work on OTA because of the amount of resources it was consuming. The issue was traced to small partition-level problems that prevented the operating system from updating correctly.
The good news is that OTA is now working 100% of the time in our current testing.
Instead of continuing to rely on the third-party OTA vendor we were originally using, we decided it would be more beneficial to build our own system from scratch, which we call SpaceUpdater. The cost to build our own system is roughly about the same as the vendor’s annual fee, but the key difference is control. By owning the system, we were able to fully fix how updates are downloaded and installed, which is what allowed us to reach a 100% success rate in testing.
This first version of SpaceUpdater is a very simple beta MVP. For now, we have not yet added most of the advanced options offered by typical OTA systems. The current version requires users to:
- Manually check for updates
- Manually download and install those updates
- Manually reboot the system to complete installation
After our mass production rollout, we plan to expand SpaceUpdater with more advanced features so it can scale as our fleet of devices grows. Future updates will include things like automatic updates, scheduled installations, and additional management tools.
To reiterate, while this version is not feature-rich like the commercial OTA system we were previously using, SpaceUpdater does exactly what we need it to do today: reliably deliver and install updates every time.
This means when you receive your safe and choose to update your software, instead of downloading a small incremental update of around 100 MBs, the system will download a full package which could be over 1,300 MBs. As a result, download, extraction, and installation times will be and may feel longer until incremental updates are added.
At a high level, here is what we’ve built:
-
Built out the SpaceUpdate APK from the ground up.
- Integrated SpaceUpdater directly into the Safe Operating System and fully removed the previous third-party OTA system (Memfault), replacing it with our own internal system logic.
-
Compared to the previous OTA system, we’ve changed the update experience so downloading and installing now happens in one continuous flow instead of two separate steps. Once you tap download and install, the system automatically transitions into installation after the download is complete, creating a smoother and more seamless user experience. After installation is complete, you are prompted to reboot the device
- Added power and WiFi safeguards. If the safe is not connected to WiFi or power, the SpaceUpdater will not proceed, and the system will display a popup explaining what is preventing the update.
While Oscar is not the best videographer, he recorded a video showing a successful OTA update from start to finish. We have been testing SpaceUpdater nonstop and can confidently confirm that it updates 100% of the time without bricking the safe. To save everyone time, we cropped and sped up the footage from 25 minutes down to 2 minutes.

🧩 PCBA Update
The team is still actively working on the PCBA and continuing testing. We expect to provide a more detailed and complete update in the next update.
As previously shared, we are exploring new investment opportunities to sell part of the company and help support mass production and offset some of the losses we’ve absorbed throughout development. This support would allow us to move quickly into full production and meet current and future demand. If we are successful in bringing in more capital, we may be able to expand our team and speed up the redesign and testing work if it comes to that.
Thank you for your unwavering support.
